‘SA protest capital of the world’

-

According to Wikipedia, South Africa is called the protest capital of the world. It was reported there were 540 protests in Gauteng between April 1 and May 10 2013. In February 2014, it was reported that there had been “nearly 3 000 protests in the last 90 days – more than 30 a day – involving more than a million people”.

Meanwhile, former minister of police Nathi Nhleko in his budget vote in parliament in 2015, said that police resources were committed to 14 740 service delivery protests around the country of which 12 451 were peaceful and 2 289 had turned violent.

He said these were more than double the number of protests police officers responded to in 2007/2008 when the number of protests stood at 7 209.
