Shereen Hunter received a vote of confidence from Brian Mitchell for joining the historically male-dominated sport of boxing by acquiring a promoter’s licence with Boxing SA.

Hunter operates under the banner of Unleashed Combat Sport.

Mitchell, a former two-time world champion, was speaking at the Pyramid Conference Centre where Hunter announced the lineup for her second tournament, which will take place at Presleys in Boksburg next Thursday.

“You are doing a fantastic job by giving these youngsters action. We are here to support you whichever way. Go girl,” said Mitchell.

Hunter said: “I hope through Unleashed we will encourage other promoters to take this sport to another level and heighten our social and community awareness so that we can aid developing boxers to a professional level. I’ve been well received in the boxing community by Boxing SA, Brian Mitchell, Andre Thysse [promoter], Nicky Ness and Anton Glimore [trainers]. I am blessed.

“Our main community initiative that we are going to drive is to collect boxing equipment that we can donate to boxing clubs of previously disadvantaged communities. We will be distributing some of the equipment during our tournament next Thursday.”

Topping her bill will be the battle for supremacy between Jason “Badman” Bedeman and Prince “The Demon” Dlomo. Bedeman, who is trained by Manny Fernandes and Domanic Chrystal at Wembley Gym, is the former WBA Pan African and IBO All-Africa lightweight champion.

Dlomo, whose skills are honed by Keith Rass in Eldorado Park, is yet to win silverware.

Bedeman said: “This is a big one for me. I need to get back into the rankings.”

Dlomo said: “I hear they say Jason is good but we will see about that.”

In the main supporting bout, Clement Kamanga will take on Willies Baloyi over six rounds.
