AKA chooses Bonang over BET
Rapper partied with his girl Bonang in New York
Rapper AKA gave the BET awards in Los Angeles, US, a miss to be with his famous girlfriend Bonang Matheba as she celebrated her birthday in New York.
AKA, whose real name is Kiernan Forbes, was nominated in the best international act: Africa at the awards which took place on Saturday night at the Microsoft Theatre.
Nigeria’s Wizkid won the award.
But AKA was in celebratory mood too, as he took to social media to post videos of himself and Matheba on a flight heading to New York on Friday for her 30th birthday party: “Taking her to NY for her birthday. Top Level.”
When a fan asked if he was going to the glamorous awards on the West Coast of the US, he said: “Nope. Not attending the BETs.”
AKA’s manager Tshiamo Letshwene said: “The nomination only came last month and he had already made plans for the birthday weekend. He could not cancel.”
Letshwene also denied reports that the rapper might propose to Matheba on their trip, he said AKA went diamond shopping last week for his chain collection.
AKA had posted a video of himself diamond shopping.
Fellow nominee Babes Wodumo, whose real name is Bongekile Simelane, caused a stir last week when it was revealed she would miss the awards because she could not secure a visa in time.
Simelane was reportedly under the impression that her travel arrangements were handled by viacom Africa, which is responsible for the BET awards in the country.
On Saturday, the Wololo hitmaker posted a picture of herself in a traditional attire next to her rumoured beau and manager Mampintsha.
However, West Ink record label’s spokesman Khulekani Mtshangase said: “It was what she would’ve won at the ceremony. She is obviously disappointed by missing the awards but Babes is Babes, she has a way of dealing with issues. She has learnt from this.”
