Ravele welcomes Hunter to BSA’s fold
Chairwoman hails women participation
New girl on the block, promoter Shereen Hunter, has received a warm welcome from Boxing SA (BSA) chairwoman Muditambi Ravele.
Hunter – the wife of former professional boxer and current trainer Lionel Hunter – operates under the banner of Unleashed Combat Sports. Other female promoters in Gauteng are Mbali Zantsi, Sonja Fernandes and Shanell Winlock.
“It is exciting that more and more women are joining the sport of boxing. Our doors are open should Shereen need assistance,” said Ravele, who is the first female to occupy the chairmanship of BSA.
Hunter held a media briefing last week and announced that her main community initiative through her promotion is to collect boxing equipment that will be don ated to boxing clubs of previously disadvantaged communities.
She will stage a tournament at Presleys in Boksburg tomorrow and some of the equipment will be distributed during that tourney.
Ravele said Hunter’s gesture gives BSA hope that she will be a champion in increasing participation within previously disadvantaged communities.
“I also think the project, women boxing, which BSA launched as its flagship is obviously bearing fruit. I would wish that Shereen encourages more women to join her stable, but that does not mean that she should ignore males,” she said.
“Hopefully, female boxers will now not have to wait for one promoter to give them action as it has been the norm.”
