Coach Jackson in the dark at Stars

No word on his role at the club

- By Sihle Ndebele

The future of Platinum Stars assistant coach Willem Jackson remains uncertain following the arrival of new coach Peter Butler at the club.

Butler, a former Botswana coach, will officially assume his role on July 1. He replaced Cavin Johnson, whose contract was not renewed by the North West club.

Butler’s arrival at Stars has left Jackson in limbo, especially with his contract expiring on Friday.

“I am not sure if I am staying with the club or not. At the moment I am just coaching the team in the CAF Confederation Cup for the remaining games. I have not met the new coach and do not know where I am standing with the club,” Jackson told Sowetan.

Despite being overlooked by management when they replaced Johnson, the former Orlando Pirates defender has not given up on becoming a head coach in future.

“My dream is to one day coach a Premiership club. I will patiently wait for my opportunity because I believe that everything has its own time. Giving up is not an option for me,’’ added the 45-year-old, who served Stars both as a player and assistant coach for more than a decade.

In his first game as caretaker coach, Dikwena were held to a 1-1 draw by Tunisian side Sfaxien at the Royal Bafokeng last week.

Stars are bottom of Group B on two points and they travel to Algeria to take on leaders Mouloudia on Friday (9pm SA time).

Dikwena will host Mbabane Swallows in their last group match on July 7 in Phokeng.
