‘Hungry’ Arendse wants to win even more trophies
Downs defender can’t wait to play
Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse would love to retire at the club because he is hungry for more success before calling it quits.
The 32-year-old recently signed a two-year contract with a one year option. This excites Arendse, who wants to constantly compete for major trophies such as the CAF Champions League and Absa Premiership.
“I want to finish my career at Sundowns. You want to play in the Champions League and for a team that’s competing for the league title every season. That’s where Sundowns is. That’s why I committed. The hard work continues,” said Arendse.
He has warned league champions Bidvest Wits that Sundowns will come back stronger next season to reclaim the title they relinquished.
“Next season we need to be ruthless at home. We had about four games at home in the closing stages of the season and drew most of them. We are going to rectify that.”
Arendse returned to full training earlier this month after recovering from an ankle injury. He has not played a competitive match since March. In his absence, 22-yearold Motjeka Madisha has done extremely well.
“I feel strong and can’t wait to play. It’s about being patient because the guys have been doing well, but I am ready to play.”
Sundowns will face Ethiopian side St George in a Champions League at Addis Ababa Stadium on Saturday (3pm SA time). St George, in third place below Sundowns, have shown they are no pushovers with their goalless draw with the reigning champions in Atteridgeville last month.
“We have to win just to be up there on the table. Even St George are thinking the same thing. It will be a good game to watch because both teams will attack. I think we will do well,” added Arendse.
