Singh on cusp of big Euro stage

Promising Luther misses out on Cosafa but trains with Braga seniors

- By Tshepang Mailwane

Luther Singh could have been part of Bafana Bafana’s Cosafa Cup squad, but he’s now enjoying pre-season in the senior team with Portuguese top flight side Sporting Braga.

Tipped as a future Bafana star, Singh is already making an impact in the first team, according to his mentor Farouk Khan.

Singh spent half of last season in the Braga reserve side after joining from Swedish outfit GAIS in January and the 19year-old will now have the opportunity to play in the Europa League next season.

“I have been talking to him via Whatsapp and he is doing well. He has already played two friendlies and has scored in both games. That’s a good sign for him. As much as the [Braga] coach [Abel Ferreira] likes him, there’s competition and he knows that in those places you need to prove your worth,” said Khan.

Singh was a key figure for Amajita during the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Zambia and U-20 World Cup in South Korea this year.

At times, however, there was a lot of responsibility placed on his shoulders, but the experience he gained in those competitions will no doubt help him going forward.

“He’s impressed quite a bit in the short time that he has played. Benni [McCarthy] has also been impressed with him,” said Khan.

“For a 19-year-old, he’s physically well built. He was playing with bigger boys when he was with us in the academy, so it was an advantage for him.”
