WINNING SISTER A DECENT BANKER

Jockey Anthony Delpech takes the ride

- RACING EDITOR

Racing looks competitive at the Vaal today but the Pick 6 should be catchable and Winning Sister in Race 8, a FM 68 Handicap over 1700m is the banker.

The Joe Soma yard is in fine form and current leader in the race for South African Champion Jockey title, Anthony Delpech, is aboard.

Winning Sister broke through the maiden ranks in June last year and has been a bit disappointing since but Soma put blinkers up last time and the filly showed nice improvement when third behind Goodytwoshoes.

The blinkers have been retained, and despite a wide draw she could prove better than some modest rivals.

Jockey Gavin Lerena is back in the country after a disappointing stint in the United Kingdom and his mount, Polly Wolly Doodle, is the biggest danger.

Polly Wolly Doodle has run particularly well at this track having won twice.

Earlier on the card Lerena’s mount, Winter Watch in Race 1, will prove very hard to beat. The scratching of her biggest danger, Mrs O, has cut the field to just six and Winter Watch has already run well in open company when run out of it late by Pied Piperess.

Lerena has won on this Roy Magner filly and knows her well enough to get the best out of her.

Louis Goosen has his yard in decent form and Rosie Bubbles has made huge improvement in her last two starts. The form of those two runs has held up so she could chase Winter Watch home.

Another runner on this card that may be worth following is Pilgrim’s Progress in Race 3, a Maiden Plate over 1800m.

The Gavin van Zyl yard is red-hot at the moment and their filly has improved with each run. Pilgrim’s Progress was runner-up at Turffontein last month behind Mrs Jay and the step up in distance will suit her and current rider Keegan de Melo is riding at the top of his game.

Lightly raced Blaclutha is the main threat to Pilgrim’s Progress.
