Sarr puts team unity first

Midfielder won’t be drawn into Sangweni rivalry

Orlando Pirates midfielder Issa Sarr isn’t too comfortable talking about the expected competition, especially in his position, following the arrival of Thamsanqa Sangweni.

The question agitated the defensive midfielder yesterday and Sarr, instead, preferred to preach unity.

“I don’t talk about competition here. We help each other and what matters is not me, is not him. It’s not anybody – it’s the team,” Sarr retorted.

“I think I don’t even need to answer that question, you understand. We are teammates and talking about competition is like we are in different teams.”

Pirates will have to be united if they are to bounce back in the new season. They have gone three seasons without a trophy.

The team’s management have responded by signing the likes of Sangweni, goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands and Nigerian striker Christian Obiozor.

Bucs have also been linked with Honest Moyo, who plays left-back for Zimbabwean side Highlanders.

Highlanders, though, yesterday denied the rumours that Moyo has signed for Pirates.

Sarr, who was among the players who unveiled the new kit yesterday in Johannesburg, has faith that the Buccaneers will bounce back in the new season.

“We were not consistent, but for now I think we don’t need to put a lot of... – I don’t know how you put it – to think a lot about it. For now we must focus on [the] front and leave what is behind us,” he said.

“Nothing is broke(n), sometimes it happens, you understand. We just go forward and look for a better season,” he continued.

The 30-year-old has also backed the newcomers to play a key role next season.

“Like I say always, if you are not good you are not going to come [to Pirates]. Pirates players are very good. I think they will bring something also,” said Sarr.
