Whose sting will hurt the most?
‘Honey Bee’ seeks revenge in a rematch against ‘The Wasp’, who stung
The looming boxing rematch between South African junior featherweight female champion Matshidiso Mokebisi and Melissa Miller is an intriguing one – pitting a wasp against a bee.
Mokebisi, from Kroonstad in Free State, is nicknamed “Nomeva – The Wasp”, while Miller, from Eldorado Park in Johannesburg, goes by the moniker “Honey Bee”.
Mokebisi stung Miller in their first match for the vacant WBF international belt at Dr Molemela Sports Complex in Bloemfontein in October last year.
Mokebisi won the bout by unanimous points decision after 10 rounds.
Their rematch next Friday night will be organised by female promoter Promise Moyo, whose Skylon Promotions and the Free State department of sports will jointly stage the eight-bout card at Lighthouse, Flamingo, in Welkom.
The full bill features a provincial flyweight championship between Gift Pilane and Jabulani Mafatle in the male section over 10 rounds.
The tournament has been dubbed “Freezing Point”.
Mokebisi is trained by Herbert Rampolokeng in Bloemfontein, while Boxing South Africa 2016 Female Prospect of the Year Miller is guided by emerging trainer Lehlohonolo Ramagole at Orlando Boxing Club in Soweto.
These corner men will also face off in a flyweight bout between Sihle “The Sting” Jelwane and Thabang “Pretty Boy” Ramagole. Moyo has also included former top amateur female boxer Tshepang Majola and Nombulelo Didi in a bantamweight bout over four rounds.
Majola, 16, won gold in the SA National Amateur Boxing Organisation championships in Khuma, North West, earlier this month before she turned professional.
Another fight will pit Bongani Mbiko from Bloemfontein against Manyi Issa from Tanzania in a lightweight international six-rounder.
There will be four more bouts and action will begin at 6pm.
