Dan The Lad and Pilou are the main threats
One can often learn something just with the naming of the runners but not too many would know Hieronymus is the Greek for Jerome.
But this Brian Wiid runner could be the best value in Race 7 at Turffontein tomorrow over 1600m.
Hieronymus clearly has ability but does not always show. However on his best form he is the one to beat over a course and distance that should suit him perfectly.
This Judpot gelding has only one win to his name in 10 starts but it is in some of his defeats that he is best judged.
At Turffontein in March the three-year-old gelding was runner-up to Pagoda in a Graduation Plate and that form is pretty good.
A few runs later Hieronymus was only 1.25 lengths behind a fair three-year-old in Hamaan over 1800m at the Vaal in May.
Deon Sampson knows the runner well and has retained the ride.
On paper there appears to be only two possible dangers: Dan The Lad and Pilou.
Dan The Lad was made to work hard when winning a Maiden Plate in March but has improved since and his recent form is decent enough. This Dan De Lago gelding was runner-up behind Sporting Monarch in his latest start and that horse has won again.
Pilou has improved this year but as the likely favourite the value could be elsewhere.
The two best bets on this card come in the opening two races as Full Mast In Race 1 and Queen Anne in Race 2 both look likely winners.
Full Mast showed nice promise when winning on debut and the slight step up in distance is likely to suit this Go Deputy colt. His trainer Mike Azzie has been in very good form lately.
The Fort Wood filly Queen Anne has been in a bit of a disappointment but meets a very modest field and appears ready to get out of maiden ranks.
