Former finance minister Pravin Gordhan has fired another salvo at President Jacob Zuma, questioning whether the radical economic transformation which is championed by him is a slogan used to mask stealing.
“What brings change is hard work,” said Gordhan, during a seminar on state capture, white monopoly capital and radical economic transformation at the University of Johannesburg’s Auckland Park campus yesterday. “Change happen because of a slogan.”
Zuma is adamant that radical economic transformation is the only way to address poverty. Gordhan startled the audience when he asked them if they will accept a R600-million bribe from the controversial Gupta family?
Some in the audience, donning ANC and EFF colours, raised their hands indicating that they will take a R600-million bribe. “Here in the front we have a person who was offered a R600-million but said keep it,” he said referring to his former deputy Mcebisi Jonas.
Gordhan described state capture as a nogo area, saying R10-billion stolen from the public purse can make huge difference in the country. In a clear reference to Zuma, Gordhan said South Africans know he is stealing from the public purse.
Jonas said South Africa was facing its defining moments politically and economically. “We are increasingly globally becoming the capital of corruption and state capture,” Jonas said.
He said state-owned enterprises were the centres of money laundering and racketeering.
Gordhan also admitted that the South Africa's economy was not transformed. “It must be an economy which is benefiting the masses in South Africa.” doesn’t
