What kept you going for so long in the world of radio?

Nothing but passion for music, and also adapting to changing times.

How did you get a break into radio?

I was introduced to radio by the likes of Mesh Mapetla, Mesh Mokoena, Tom Mphatsoe, Willie Moloisi, Lucky Ntuli, Cocky Tlhotlhalemaje and Danisa Lavisa at the then Radio Swazi.

Highlights of your radio career?

Being first music compiler at Kaya FM and building their music library from scratch; also introducing new acts like Freshlyground and Linda Kekana.

How do you relax and where?

I like to relax at places like Niki’s in Newtown or in Soweto at places like Masakeng, Robbie’s in Pimville or Papi’s Place. And, like a doctor always carrying his stethoscope, I bring my music CDs along every time so I can entertain the patrons.

Your most treasured possession?

My music collection. I have more than 50 000 CDs and vinyls.

Most embarrassing radio moment?

It happened at Radio Metro during the 1980s while doing the graveyard shift from midnight to 6am with my fellow trainees Wilson B Nkosi, Sheila “D” Dladla and Tim Modise. Sheila and I had organised a bottle of gin and drank it at work. When my turn came to man the air, I forgot to switch off the Metro jingle, which continued to play in the background while I was playing music. My boss, Koos Radebe, fired me on the spot.

What is your favourite drink?

Whisky.

What do you like most about it?

It doesn’t give me a hangover.
