United eager to claim Amakhosi sclap in opener

After capping off last season in style by clinching the Nedbank Cup, SuperSport United captain Dean Furman hopes they can build from that feat when they face Kaizer Chiefs in the first leg of the MTN8 quarterfinals tomorrow at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 8.15pm.

“I think we can build from what we achieved last season,” said Furman. “We must be competitive in all fronts. For us it is great to be starting the season again, because we have not had much of an off-season, but that was something that we had to get over quickly.”

The 29-year-old tough-tackling midfielder expects Matsatsantsa to improve in the “Wafa Wafa” cup after a disappointing campaign in the same competition last season.

“For us the MTN8 was the only competition that we did not have a good run last season. We got to the final of the Telkom Knockout, we are in the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup and we won the Nedbank Cup, doing badly in this competition was very disappointing. This time around we must try to do well,” he said.

Furman is confident that new coach Eric Tinkler will help the Tshwane-based outfit reach greater heights this season, starting with the MTN8.

“We saw how exciting Cape Town City were last season [under Tinkler].

“They were definitely one of the teams to watch. He is doing well as coach.”
