Businessman, philanthropist, ardent soccer fan and deeply religious family man Tshele Modupe will be sorely missed by his community.

Popularly known as “Bra Jeff”, the likeable and humble Modupe was born in Klerksdorp in North West.

His parents, Bethuel and Wilhemina, later moved to Boikhutso, also known as Phola, in Lichtenburg. That’s where he started to school.

He worked for multinational petroleum company Mobil Oil which later became Engen. He spent 40 years there until he retired. During that time he was also elected deputy mayor of now defunct Boikhutso municipality in late 1980s.

Bra Jeff had a very intelligent mind, especially when it came to business. Also in the 80s, he ran a coal-trading business, a convenience store and owned minibus taxis.

His philanthropic ways showed his softer side as he selflessly gave back to his own community, who he dearly held in his heart.

He hosted annual Christmas parties for his loyal clients and neighbours. Those who knew him can attest to the fact that Bra Jeff made and lived a good life.

He married Bini Magdeline Modupe (nee Molamu) in 1967. The couple were blessed with three children – two girls and a boy.

Bra Jeff was a staunch member of the AME Church, where he dedicated much of his time, serving in different capacities. He relaxed by listening to gospel music. He was also a passionate and card-carrying Kaizer Chiefs fan.

Bra Jeff was a man of few words, humble and always had an ear for everyone. He was considered a community elder of note. His wisdom benefitted many.

Bra Jeff is survived by his wife, two children and a granddaughter.
