ANC can’t force everyone to love Jacob Zuma

-

For most South Africans, the current ANC is like a misbehaving family member. We all have those and we always wish they could change and become better people.

After Jacob Zuma escaped the eighth vote of no confidence, I was hoping the ANC would take it as an opportunity to reflect. I was hoping that even the known hotheads would embrace Zizi Kodwa’s comments that ANC members who voted with the opposition showed that our democracy has matured. Any South African who loves the ANC wants it to stop its selfdestructive tendencies.

Expelling comrades who voted in favour of a motion of no confidence can only mean that the ANC continues bleeding members that it can’t afford to lose. The ANC could do with lots of calm heads right now, but I’m not counting on it. If the ANC adopts brainless strategies of expelling anyone with differing views, it might as well close shop before it embarrasses itself in the 2019 elections.

The best thing the ANC could do right now is to ensure that only one person is responsible for making public statements.

The party also needs to clarify its stance on unity. You can’t talk about unity while you’re busy threatening to expel people. The ANC can’t force everyone to love Zuma.

Comrades calling for expulsions don’t love the ANC. It’s all about themselves. Richardson Mzaidume
