Richard is King Of The Corn

Michael Robinson’s gelding needed his last start

- By Racing Editor

King Of The Corn had a very good season last season winning five races, with two of those wins happening over the course and distance he faces at Kenilworth today. The five-year-old gelding was rested from April and returned to the track in July and was a decent third be hind Platinum Prince and only 2.55 lengths be hind. King Of The Corn only tired very late that day indicating he was just in need of the race. Apprentice Akshay Balloo was aboard him and has been replaced by Richard Fourie. Fou rie has been aboard the gelding for all five of those wins last season. Obviously the big gest danger to King Of The Corn is the Justin Snaith-trained One Direction. Snaith should have a good line of form on his rival as it was his trained runner Plati num Prince who beat him last time out. One Direction has not won a race for nearly a year but his recent form suggests that might change very soon. The Vaughan Mar shall-trained Sequined has improved in most of her starts and only found the unbeat en Lady In Black 1.75 lengths last time out. This Oratorio filly was also only 0.50 lengths behind Meryl in her previous start. That form is very strong considering Se quined is running in a Maiden Plate. Her big gest obstacle could be her wide draw which can be a problem over the 1400m she contests in Race 4. With jockey MJ Byleveld being off through injury it gives Grant van Niekerk the opportunity to shine on the three-year-old filly. The form dangers to her are Heart Of A Leg end and Township Mel ody. Heart Of A Legend has Fourie up and is hold ing form well enough but is also badly drawn. Township Melody could get the run of the race from her decent draw and her best run to date was her latest start. She steps up in distance and tries the bend for the first time.
