Greek Fire starts to payoff huge cost

The Azzies’ charge wins well on debut

- By Racing Editor

Horses do not know how much they cost and they should not be judged on that but it is always worth noting when a decent amount is paid for them so it was nice to see Greek Fire started repaying the faith of his owner by winning on debut at Turffontein on Saturday. The Dynasty colt was out of the decent mare Garland who won many races and he found good betting support to start a clear favourite. Jockey Piere Strydom had Greek Fire just off the early gallop but was quick to take up the running in the straight and fought on well for a comfortable win. Greek Fire was full of running and it could suggest that he will go further than the 1450m of his win. Both the second home Imperial Ounce and third placed Artax tried their best and are not far off winning their first race. Most betting support in Race 4 at Turffontein was for the Lucky Houdalakis-trained Galactic Warrior but once again it was a Dynasty three-year-old that proved best. Sir David Baird was his name and the Mike de Kocktrained gelding showed that he is a decent sort and races. should win many Sir David Baird was never too far off the pace but quickened nicely to win very easily. Galactic Warrior looked dangerous at one stage but found no extra late and was passed for second place by Red Indy. Galactic Warrior will clearly improve on this run and should not be in the maiden ranks for too long. Captain’s Girl and She’s A Dragon both bounced back to winning form and won nice races and could win again over similar. The partnership of Mike and Adam Azzie also sent out a well backed three-year-old Full Mast to win Race 8 at Turffontein but inexperience in just his third start seemed to cost him dearly as he always travelled well but failed to peg back a much improved Daytona Charger. Full Mast will probably want further and a stronger ride.
