Dr Tumi books place in exclusive league

Gospel artist fills Ticketpro Dome

Dr Tumi booked himself a place in the exclusive league of local artists who have managed to fill up the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg on Sunday night.

The gospel superstar’s concert, The Gathering of Worshippers, was sold out with a few days to go, guaranteeing him a spot alongside rapper Cassper Nyovest, The Parlotones and comedian Trevor Noah. Dr Tumi, whose real name is Tumisang Makweya and is a qualified medical doctor, pulled off this feat in just six weeks.

The over three-hour set had its energetic moments where he kept worshippers on their feet, singing along at the top of their voices, before he slowed things down with some sombre songs. About 13 new songs were specially written for the concert which was also recorded for DVD release.

Moments after getting off stage, Dr Tumi remarked: “I’m grateful that this has happened because it only mean you can do more. If this was testing the ground, then the ground came positive. I’m excited that people came out in numbers.

“The doubts came from people who would start telling you that it can’t be done. But you need to encourage yourself. You can’t depend on people to tell you what you can achieve and what you can’t.

As he puts finishing touches to his next album, Dr Tumi said the secret to his success was to keep things simple.

“The simpler you get the easier it is to connect with people. I wanted songs that are simple to the heart.”

His wife Kgaugelo said seeing his enthusiasm convinced her that he would succeed. “This is the beginning of big shows whether locally or internationally. He has always wanted to do something like this all around the world.”

Dr Tumi surprised fans when he did a medley featuring fellow gospel stars such as Mahalia Buchanan, Neyi Zimu, Pastor Lungi and Janine Price. Gauteng MEC of social development Nandi Mayathula-Khoza also attended and spoke on behalf of the government.
