Vodacom pays back mysteriously lost data

Glitch leaves cellular provider with egg on face

- By Isaac Mahlangu

Vodacom customers who mysteriously lost data on Monday evening have all been reimbursed, the network provider said yesterday.

The mobile network provider’s spokesman, Byron Kennedy, apologised to their customers for the inconvenience that the technical glitch had caused.

“Vodacom confirms that it has reimbursed customers affected by the billing issue and remains committed to ensuring that all customers are refunded in full,” Kennedy said yesterday.

High-profile consumers like Police Minister Fikile Mbalula‚ former public protector Thuli Madonsela and radio host Eusebius Mckaizer joined the fray after the data bungle that led to a social media storm.

For some, Vodacom’s apology was inadequate.

“Good morning to everyone. Except @Vodacom‚ I hope you’re having the worst of all days‚” media personality Boity Thulo tweeted.

“But the WHY is missing. Why did this happen? Was it a deliberate act of abuse & theft on your part @Vodacom?” asked former 702 radio host Redi Tlhabi.

One user said the technical glitch could affect his education prospects. Bongani ZuluBoy Mthombeni said he was in danger of missing a deadline to submit a bursary application‚ according to a message circulated on social media. –
