Madumo, all that jazz and whisky

-

Veteran Metro FM jazz host Nothemba Madumo’s name is synonymous with jazz music. She is the compiler and producer of her radio show. Her company 4EverJazz, is immersed in jazz activities and promotes local and international tours.

What inspired your love for jazz?

I blame my parents for that. They didn’t allow any other music to be played in the house.

Name your favourite top-three jazz musicians?

Ohh, that’s difficult. All I can say is that my favourite instrument is a piano, followed by bass guitarists, then saxophonists and trumpeters. Jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim was also my piano teacher when he was in exile in Swaziland.

Your favourite drink?

I love wine. I also love whisky.

Which overseas jazz artist gave you the most memorable interview?

Wow! [American artist] Rachelle Ferrell when she performed at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival a few years ago. Maybe because I love her. At the end of the interview she said to me “Wow!” She said she didn’t know that there could be someone who knew so much about her. Another interview I enjoyed was with Abdullah Ibrahim. He revealed a lot about himself. He also explained how he does his music and why it sounds the way it does.

Your best way to relax?

Jazz, whisky and wine with friends.

Do you attend overseas jazz shows?

Yes. The North Sea Jazz Festival held annually in the Netherlands. This year I attended the Blue Note Jazz cruise from Miami to the Caribbean islands.
