Phila Mpontshana’s eight months of fame as the South African junior lightweight champion will come to a screeching end – warns challenger Lucky Monyebane.

Mpontshana from the famed Eyethu Gym of then outstanding trainer Mzimasi Mnguni in Mdantsane will bid for the first defence of the belt he won from Aphiwe Mboyiya in December against Monyebane at the Portuguese Hall, south of Johannesburg, on Sunday.

The bout will headline the “Trilogy Boxing Festival” tournament to be presented by Unleashed promotion of female promoter Shereen Hunter.

Monyebane, the pride of Dikebu village near Makapanstad in North West said: “Mpontshana’s fame will come to an end and I am sure about ending his reign. I know nothing about Mpontshana as a fighter except that he holds the title I want dearly.”

Successful trainer Harold Volbrecht is responsible for Monyebane’s promising career. The boxer, who has five wins against a loss, currently holds the Gauteng title he won easily against veteran Ashely Dlamini in April.

The well-spoken challenger said: “My aspiration of becoming a South African champion remains paramount. I am on a mission to win a world title but the first step begins with the South African title.

“I signed the contract knowing that I will face a closed book. I began training for this fight in July and I have well over 200 rounds of sparring. I train twice a day, six times a week, so I am more than ready.”

Mpontshana has 11 wins from 12 fights.

There are lots of other bouts in the undercard including a 10-rounder for the vacant Gauteng junior welterweight belt between Michael Mokoena and Tebogo Malose.

Crowd favourite Jarred “My Hollywood” Sliverman will be in action against Zenzele Ntanzi while Shayvonne Pattison and Lillian Molala will meet in the female heavyweight bout. It was announced that R10 000 will be awarded to a “Fight of the Day”.

Action will begin at 2pm.
