De Kock out to master spin demon

Star gearing up for Bangladesh visit

- By Gomolemo Motshwane

Quinton de Kock wants to play a hand in helping South Africa produce batsmen who can handle facing spin bowlers from the subcontinent.

The Proteas top-order batsman not only aims to assist others but has been putting in the long hours in the nets with the aim of improving his subpar performances against spin bowlers from the subcontinent.

South Africans will be reacquainted with difficult spin bowlers when they host Bangladesh late next month.

De Kock has launched a batting mat that simulates the tricky bowling South African batsmen will have to deal with against Bangladesh.

“I am not the best spin [-playing] batsman but I have been working hard to get better. We need as much help as we can get because we have been brought up on pacefriendly wickets,” he said.

It is no wonder, then, that he is not the only South African batsman to struggle against the likes of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The 24-year-old is, however, a vastly improved player from the one that was dropped from selection the last time the Proteas faced Bangladesh in 2015.

He has ambitions of ending South Africa’s trophy drought.

“I’d love to win a world cup, not just for me but for the country. Winning an ICC trophy of any sorts would be a dream for many South Africans and that’s what every cricketer wants to do to make the country proud.”
