PSL champions are feeling the pressure

GAVIN HUNT’S TEAM HAVE GONE FIVE GAMES WITHOUT A VICTORY

- By Mark Gleeson

Bidvest Wits are finding the business of being league champions tough going and sit on the brink of an unwanted record if they do not win against Cape Town City in their MTN8 semi-final, second-leg tie at home on Sunday.

Wits will be attempting to come back from a 0-1 deficit to beat the team from the Mother City on goal difference and claim a place in the MTN8 final as they seek to defend one of the two titles they won last season.

But failure to win will extend to six games their winless run and mark a low under coach Gavin Hunt, who has provided the club with unprecedented success.

Wits last went six games without a victory five years ago in 2012, before Hunt took over at the club.

Their current run includes the last game of last season, a 1-0 loss at Kaizer Chiefs after they had already claimed their first-ever championship.

In this campaign they have started with a home draw against Lamontville Golden Arrows, coming back from 0-2 down and with only 10 men to eventually force the game to a post-match penalty shootout to get through the quarter-final of the MTN8.

Wits then lost their opening game of the league season at home to Cape Town City before going to Bethlehem where they twice let slip the lead and ended up drawing the game 2-2.

That was followed by defeat in Cape Town as they met City again, this time in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final.

Hunt has had a fortnight to prepare for the return match at the Bidvest Stadium this Sunday, but without several key players who have been away on international duty.
