One of the suspects linked to the murder of TV personality Dumi Masilela’s allegedly confessed to police about witnessing his killing.

Mfundo Nkosi, one of the two men who appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with Masilela’s murder, was allegedly part of a gang of six men who had hijacked a Jeep in Daveyton before Masilela’s shooting in Tembisa.

Nkosi appeared alongside Bongani Masombuka yesterday. They are both facing a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances linked to Masilela’s murder.

According to a confession relayed to the court yesterday by the investigating officer Detective Mthokozisi Ngwenya, Nkosi confessed to police after turning himself in when he heard Masombuka had been arrested.

Ngwenya claimed the ‘owner’ of the Jeep, Trevor Shabangu, was in his car with the gang when they attempted to hijack Masilela’s car.

In his confession, according to police, Nkosi said he was present when Masilela was gunned down, but was not the one who pulled the trigger.

He claimed that another of his accomplices, who is currently in police custody in Germiston for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, was behind the shooting.

However, Magistrate Elmari Schutte criticised Ngwenya for failing to conduct an identity parade with the owner of the Jeep and another witness who claimed to have seen the gunman who ambushed Masilela in Tembisa.

Schutte postponed the matter to tomorrow, to allow Ngwenya to determine whether the fingerprint report linked to the Jeep had been concluded.
