Mashudu leaves boxers, trainers in the lurch
Boxing SA (BSA) is unimpressed with the conduct of female promoter Pauline Mashudu because she has failed to deposit purse monies on time.
Mashudu was informed well in advance that the tournament in Venda was actually off. The Nzhelele Women Sport Promoters boss, however, only informed the boxers on the eve of the weigh-in. The tournament was supposed to have happened in early August but it was postponed to two weekends ago due to Mashudu’s failure to deposit purse monies.
“The promoter was well aware in advance of the cancellation. We asked her to communicate with boxers on time. She did not comply with [the] deadline for purse monies,” said BSA chief operation officer Cindy Nkomo.
“BSA is at a point where we will not allow promoters to just cancel because they did not comply, because we are avoiding giving an impression that they can contract boxers and just drop them.”
Sowetan was unable to get comment from Mashudu yesterday.
Nyelisani Thagambega, who was to oppose Zolile Miya for the Limpopo flyweight title in the main bout, said: “This promoter is being insensitive and I am very angry… I gave her the benefit of doubt when she postponed it for the first time. It is just not on.
“What makes it even worse is that this happens when one is ready to jump on the scale. You can imagine the disappointment after so many sacrifices of starving yourself of food because you don’t want mistakes with the weight.”
Lehlohonolo Ramagole, who trains Miya in Soweto, said: “I found out on the eve of the fight last week that the tournament had been cancelled. I have lost trust [in Mashudu].”
