It’s clear that Orlando Pirates are a work in progress despite their 1-0 win over Ajax Cape Town here last night.

Ghanaian forward Bernard Morrison, who joined the club last year in June, finally scored his first goal which separated the two sides.

The players, under Micho Sredojevic’s guidance, seem to be fighting hard for the starting berths.

Since his first match, which was also a 1-0 home win against Chippa United, the Serbian has been giving a lot of players an opportunity to stake their claim in the starting 11 and some have responded well.

Take Mthokozisi Dube for example. The right-back was given a run last night and didn’t disappoint.

Pirates started well like they did in their game against Chippa and 1-1 draw against Baroka, but like in those games, they allowed Ajax to come back into the game.

After Morrison’s goal, Thamsanqa Gabuza came close to increasing their lead in the 27th minute but his shot was blocked for a corner.

The visitors could have levelled matters just before the break, but striker Tashreeq Morris’s attempt was wide.

The home side did score on a counter attack five minutes into the second stanza, but it was ruled offside.

Elsewhere, Maritzburg United’s 100 percent Absa Premiership record ended as they drew with AmaZulu, while Bloemfontein Celtic beat Polokwane City 2-1. Chippa United lost 3-1 to Baroka.
