Molewa’s marriage ends on sour note

Minister speaks badly of ex-hubby

- By Mpho Sibanyoni

Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa’s public dressing down of her former husband Richard marked an acrimonious end to their 22year-old marriage.

Molewa described him as a disgruntled attention-seeker “with no reputation to speak of … [who] clutches to the coattails of others”.

This was in response to media reports that claimed the minister allegedly cheated on her ex-husband and wanted him killed.

According to City Press newspaper, Richard claimed the minister was in a love triangle with political commentator Professor Sipho Seepe.

Richard had apparently laid charges against Seepe who he accused of trying to kill him, using a knife, at Molewa’s home in Waterkloof in 2015.

The acrimony between the former couple came in the same week their marriage was annulled by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

Although the law prohibits the naming of parties to a divorce, in a media release issued at the weekend, Molewa confirmed the divorce.

She refused to comment yesterday and Richard was not available for comment.

Seepe denied having an affair with Molewa. “[Richard] knows fully well the minister, me and him have been close friends. He could have simply come to me instead of spreading the rumours.”

He said it was wrong to pin the blame of the breakdown of the marriage on him. “Ultimately it is their relationship, it has nothing to do with me.”
