Clever Boys feel like huge weight is lifted

Staying grounded key to big win over Bucs: Monare

It’s hard to believe that champions Bidvest Wits went eight games without a win in all competitions, but they have now put the disastrous start behind them after their league win against Orlando Pirates at the weekend.

Midfielder Thabang Monare said the Clever Boys weren’t bothered by their poor start and knew they would turn the corner.

“What’s football without pressure? I really think it’s sometimes good to have pressure, but it should be good pressure,” Monare told Sowetan after their win at Bidvest Stadium.

“But being there at the bottom of the table, we took it quite bad, looking at the experience we have in the team,” he admitted.

The 27-year-old commended the team for the way they played against the Buccaneers, considering they had been struggling for form.

“I think we put in a really good shift [against Pirates]. I think the three points we collected will take us a long way,” he said.

Wits have dominated Pirates in the past few seasons with five league wins on the trot, but the Embalenhle, Mpumalangaborn midfielder said they didn’t underestimate Pirates, who have had a relatively good start – and that’s why he believes they won on the day.

“We didn’t underestimate them, especially because they have been in pretty good form. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy and it was not easy, so we never undermined them; we came here and we wanted to work hard. We respected them and the boys worked so hard,” Monare continued.

Wits’s next challenge is Bloemfontein Celtic at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium on Sunday and Monare is confident they can continue winning.

“We are focusing on our next game and that’s what we do in the team. It’s not about what you can do in the long run, so we are focusing on what we can do next game against Celtic,” he added.
