ANC Youth League deputy secretary Thandi Moraka has been accused of drawing a salary from the Limpopo legislature but failing to pitch for work in two years.

The accusation against Moraka, who earns almost R900 00 a year, was levelled by opposition members in the provincial legislature yesterday. EFF provincial secretary, Jossey Buthane, said they wanted Moraka removed as a member of the legislature after she allegedly failed to perform her duties.

Buthane said his party raised the issue during a recent legislature sitting.

He said they made a request for the speaker of the legislature, Polly Boshielo, to take action against Moraka.

“The rules of the house state clearly that she must be released from her duties,” Buthane said.

He said MPLs were expected to notify the house should they fail to report for work because of family emergencies, ill health and other reasons.

“Thandi Moraka has not done that,” Buthane said. He said they would go as far as approaching the courts should Boshielo fail to take action.

DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle said Moraka also receives an additional R40 000 constituency per month.

Smalle said the DA also wanted action to be taken. He said according to the rules, an MPL should be removed automatically should they miss 14 allowance sittings in a row without explanation. “She is no longer a credible member,” he said.

Moraka told Sowetan she did not have time for “nonsense” when contacted for comment yesterday.

Moraka said there was an attendance register in the legislature which clarified who was present during sittings.

“So I don’t have time for nonsense,” she said.

ANC chief whip Falaza Mdaka said the matter has been addressed.

“She is now attending legislature meetings,” Mdaka said, adding Moraka was absent because of political matters.

“We have passed a resolution in the legislature that she be given a leave of absence.” –
