To be probed for dagga use in jail

Convicted rapist and kwaito star Sipho Ndlovu‚ 37‚ known as “Brickz”‚ could find himself in hot water after it was revealed in court that he smokes weed in prison to keep calm.

This came out yesterday in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court where a social worker’s report indicated that Ndlovu smoked the illegal contraband and sang his yet-to-be-released music to inspire inmates.

Reacting to the claims, the Department of Correctional Services said it would launch an investigation, saying it is illegal to use drugs while in custody.

The department’s Singabhako Nxumalo said: “Marijuana is illegal in this country, not only in prison where it is classified as contraband.”

The SA Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights said the department was bluffing.

Spokesman Golden Miles Bhudu said it was an open secret that marijuana was smoked in prisons.

He said what needed to be investigated is who brings the contraband into prison.

Yesterday, the court heard that Ndlovu, left his relative with a sexually transmitted infection after raping her.

This is according to prosecutor Pratisha Salie, who said the survivor had not forgiven Ndlovu for raping her.

According to the victim impact report, the victim said: “Malume (uncle), you have really hurt me. I ask myself what I did for you to rape me. I wanted you to treat me like your daughter but you didn’t. I will never be able to be proud of myself and can’t trust anyone.”

Ndlovu’s lawyer Pieter du Plessis asked the court to deviate from a minimum sentence and impose 10 years. Sentencing continues on October 17.
