However, the mood has changed at their Naledi home since the passing of their mother, Cynthia Khanyi.

Khanyi died on September 19 after a short illness. She was born the third child of Connelius and Linah Smangele Mahlambi in 1961 in Emdeni.

She completed her matric at Dr BW Vilakazi in Zola North, where she also met her future husband Mandla.

The high school sweethearts tied the knot in 1984, a few years after their first child in 1981.

In total they had four children, a son Linda and three daughters Sebenzile, Lungile and Sizakele.

Khanyi, a lifelong student, went on to graduate at Soweto Teachers College with an advanced diploma in education.

She also held an honours degree, a masters degree, a couple of certificates and diplomas, one from Dale Carnegie in Manchester, England.

“My mom always wanted us to be educated,” said Sebenzile.

She had actively participated as a school treasurer, Sadtu branch secretary and Independent Electoral Commission officer.

She was also ANC branch secretary at the Moloto Tambane ANC branch.

She ended her teaching career in 2005 and the following year became a ward councillor until her death.

Khanyi is survived by her husband, her children, daughterin-law, three sons-in-law, eight grandchildren, three brothers and sisters.

Her love will forever be engraved in our hearts.
