Veselin oiling Celtic into free-scoring elite

Ndengane lauds push from coach

- By Gomolemo Motshwane

Bloemfontein Celtic coach Veselin Jelusic wants all hands on deck in the scoring duties, with defenders also expected to contribute goals.

This after Celtic had the Absa Premiership’s worst scoring record last season with an awful strike rate that could only muster 16 goals in 30 games.

“The coach wants us to get into the score-sheet, especially through set-pieces,” utility player Alfred Ndengane told Sowetan.

“The coach has been emphasising that we need to push forward more and score goals. Even in our training sessions we focus on scoring.”

Celtic currently have one win, three draws and a loss.

They will be looking for their second win against defending champions Bidvest Wits at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday (3pm).

In the transfer window, management reinforced the strike force with Ndumiso Mabena and Roggert Nyundu.

“There is a lot of improvement from last season.

“They [Mabena and Nyundu] have been scoring goals. I am very impressed with them because not scoring was our weakness last season,” said Ndengane.

“I am confident that we have enough arsenal in our attack this time.”

The struggling Wits, who broke their winless duck in a 10 win against Orlando Pirates last weekend, have one win, two draws and three losses.

As a senior member of the squad, Ndengane, 30, has also been giving pointers to the coach about the playing style of Wits.

“We expect Wits to use the long ball and crosses into the box.

“They always look for a second ball for their attackers but we believe we can match them in aerial balls,” he said.
