Paez sends a strong warning to Baroka
Chiefs striker targets many goals this season
Baroka beware, Kaizer Chiefs striker Gustavo Paez is aiming to take you down at Moses Mabhida Stadium tomorrow (6pm).
When the season started, Paez had set himself a target of scoring 10 goals at the end of the 2017/18 campaign – and now he’s changed his tune.
The Amakhosi faithful will be happy to hear that the Venezuelan wants to reach that target by December, but for Baroka, the 27-year-old’s newly found confidence is not good news.
Paez realises that he can get more goals after netting three in seven matches and told the media just as much yesterday.
“For me, okay you say I have three goals. I want to score ... I say maybe 10 from now until December, but it all depends on the team and me to take the chances.
“We have to try to create more occasions (chances) to arrive at that number,” said Paez, who now appears settled in Naturena, nine months after first setting foot there.
Chiefs, though, won’t have it their way against Bakgaga if previous results are anything to go by.
In three attempts, Chiefs have failed to beat the Limpopo side since they first met in 2011.
Baroka beat them 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals back when the Limpopo outfit were in the lower leagues.
When they met the last time, they played to a 2-2 draw at Pe- ter Mokaba Stadium. To make things even more interesting, Baroka are placed second on the log after six matches, while Chiefs are fourth from the same number of matches.
“We know Baroka is a very fast team and they are similar to Golden Arrows (who drew 0-0 with Chiefs last weekend). We have to try to defend [well],” Paez acknowledged.
Chiefs can also count on the likes of Siphiwe Tshabalala, while former Chiefs striker Lewis Macha will have a point to prove to his former employers as he turns out for Baroka.
