Majoro put in cotton wool until cup final

CAPE TOWN CITY COACH BENNI McCARTHY IS TAKING NO CHANCES

- By Mark Gleeson

Cape Town City striker Lehlohonolo Majoro is to be wrapped in cotton wool this week to ensure a light knee injury does not turn any more serious and again deny him a chance to play in a cup final.

The 31-year-old striker sat out the weekend derby victory over against Ajax Cape Town because of a niggling knee complaint as coach Benni McCarthy looked to protect him against possibly making it worse and leading him to miss out on the MTN8 final.

City take on SuperSport United in the decider at the Moses Madhida Stadium in Durban next Saturday 14 October.

Injury sidelined Majoro last year when City beat SuperSport in the Telkom Knockout final in Polokwane.

“The only reason why I didn’t start him against Ajax was that last week in training he got a knock on his right knee,” explained McCarthy.

“At times in training I could see him limping and he came in and out of the sessions. So I didn’t want to take the risk of him missing another final. Last year he missed the final and I know the feeling for a player who scores the vital goal for the team to get there and then you have to miss out on the match. That’s a killer.

“I thought the Ajax game was one where other players could step in. We know that we have time to get him fit. A fit and healthy and ready Majoro for the final, along with Victor Obinna, will make us a potent force,” the City coach added.

Majoro has previously won silverware when he played in Kaizer Chiefs’ winning side against SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup final four years ago. Chiefs were 1-0 winners of that game.
