Stockbroker not whining about wine

- Ray Ndlovu’s transition to wine business pays off.

One of the country’s most successful stockbrokers, Ray Ndlovu, left the bustle of the stock exchange to start a winery, along with business partner Kevin Swart of Noah Financial Innovation, whose majority shareholding they sold to an international investment banking group.

Their wines, crafted under Black Elephant label, have received much acclaim locally and globally.

How did the idea of starting your own winery come about?

Upon completion of selling our majority stake, we embarked on a much-needed sabbatical, during which Kevin and I decided to relocate to Franschhoek in 2011 and 2102, respectively.

The wine business opportunity emerged from a series of fortunate coincidences.

Five years later, do you harbour any regrets?

No regrets whatsoever. It has been a fulfilling, challenging and enlightening journey.

Have you earned a few grey hairs from transitioning to wine business?

Without doubt. Like many others, the wine industry is not without some critical and fundamental challenges.

Before making the move to the Cape winelands, were you a great wine lover?

I have always had a passion for and interest in wine and its associated lifestyle.

What would you consider as milestones for your wines?

The growing recognition of our wines, particularly from top chefs and select restaurants in the country.

What do you want wine drinkers to know about your wines?

They are made as naturally as possible.
