Designer Paledi honoured at Men’s Fashion Week in Lagos
SAFW collection will be inspired by Mbeki speech
Johannesburg fashion designer Paledi Segapo of Palse jets out to Nigeria on Friday to receive the Special Fashion Achievement Award from the organisers of the Men’s Fashion Week Nigeria in Lagos.
He will return to finalise his collection ahead of SA Fashion Week scheduled for October 27 in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.
Segapo said he will take his Secret Garden collection that he showed at the Durban Fashion Fair to Nigeria to showcase.
Already with two awards to his credit – African Designer of the Year in 2015 and creative professional of the year at the Ikusasa Youth Awards in 2012 – Segapo also showed at the recent Africa Fashion Week London.
“I believe they think there’s something I’m doing right and have achieved as a designer of colour to come out of Africa, but I think I still have some way to go. Suffice to say, I’m truly humbled and honoured for this major continental recognition.”
Segapo said his SAFW collection will be inspired by former president Thabo Mbeki’s “I am an African” speech.
“Fashion has become so big yet small and accessible. We are all about silhouettes and trends.
“My collection will reflect the trends as they are happening in Europe, but for the first time will incorporate the African aesthetic in a minimalistic manner. There will be influences of Paris...”
