Mokoka switches to Shanghai race
Endurance fails star in Durban
After claiming fourth spot at the FNB Durban 10km City Surf Run on Sunday, twotime Olympian Stephen Mokoka has now set his sights on retaining his Shanghai International Marathon title next month.
Mokoka clocked 28:34 at the inaugural Durban leg of the “Run Your City” series at the weekend and has stressed the importance of switching his focus to defending his crown in China on November 12.
“I would have loved to win this race [FNB Durban 10km City Surf Run] but I do not feel sorry for myself because I know that I have to prepare for China.
“Last year my time [in Shanghai] was 2:10:18 and I won it. This year I aim to improve that time which I think will see me retain my title,” Mokoka said.
“I started very well [on Sunday] but the problem was when I approached the halfway mark. My endurance was not good.
“It is something I am eager to rectify before going to China,’’ said Mokoka.
The 32-year-old long-distance runner has participated in the Shanghai race for six consecutive years, winning it three times.
His victories have made him the second man to collect three winners medals in the race’s 21-year history.
Mokoka feels his seventh appearance in Shanghai will not be a walk in the park.
“It will be the most difficult race because other athletes have learnt how I do things.
“When you are a champion, everyone plans against you but I am positive that I will overcome their challenge.”
