Zuma to hear fate on 783 charges
SCA to rule today
After more than eight years of legal battles President Jacob Zuma will know today whether he will have to face up to the 783 corruption charges levelled against him.
The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) is likely to dismiss Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) application for leave to appeal a North Gauteng High Court ruling that charges be reinstated.
The ruling today will come after a stunning last-minute concession by Zuma that the 2009 decision to drop the charges was irrational.
Zuma now wants to make fresh submissions to current NPA boss Shaun Abrahams for the decision on whether he actually faces the charges. Abrahams has been accused of protecting Zuma.
Zuma’s argument was that if the decision to drop the charges was irrational, he now wants someone to make a rational decision.
His counsel Kemp J Kemp has asked the SCA to direct the NPA on what should follow from a procedural perspective if the high court judgment is upheld.
The DA, which brought the high court application to have the charges reinstated, said it was time for Zuma to face the courts.
