Loss to Fuzile a blessing in disguise for Maemu

He’s a better boxer now, says trainer

- By Bongani Magasela

Trainer Alan Toweel Junior says Rofhiwa “War Child” Maemu’s loss to Azinga “Golden Boy” Fuzile in July has actually turned the former into a better boxer.

Toweel was reacting to Maemu’s points win against equally competent Emmanuel Andeleki of Namibia for the WBA Pan African belt in Gaborone, Botswana, on Wednesday.

“Rofhiwa has improved tremendously. He threw some excellent right hooks to the body and lightning fast jabs,” said Toweel yesterday.

“His head movement is improving; overall he is learning his trade and improving his style of fighting.”

Maemu, from Soweto, improved to 13 wins in 22 bouts.

His stable-mate Jeff “911” Magagane lost again to Ayanda “Greyhound” Nkosi for the same organisation’s lightweight belt.

Nkosi stopped Magagane in the eighth round, thereby ended his short reign as Gauteng champion in March.

“Jeff was very disciplined in the fight on Wednesday to such an extent that I had him one point ahead towards the end of the fight.

“But it was a close fight to call and we acknowledge the loss as an opportunity to grow,” said Toweel.

Other results:

Percy Mkhize beat Kgomotso Bok on points over six rounds; Nyiko Ndukula and Rofhiwa Nemushungwa drew over four rounds.
