‘Menzo lacks knowledge of local lads’

Coach ill-advised, claims Paulse

- By Sihle Ndebele

Amid Ajax Cape Town’s shaky start to the season, exstriker Nathan Paulse reckons coach Stanley Menzo was not advised properly about the Absa Premiership before the Dutch-born tactician was appointed as the Urban Warriors mentor last year.

“He has a tough job ahead of him. I believe that he could have been advised a bit more about the local game and how the mindset of SA players is like,” said Paulse, who had three different spells at Ajax.

“I do not think he was informed enough on how to get the best out of a South African player because it is not the same as in Europe. I do not blame Menzo because I know he has his qualities and can still turn things around because it is still early, but I blame his lack of knowledge of local players.’’

Ajax have always believed in youth, but Paulse feels that approach must be balanced.

“The team believes in youngsters a lot. I do not have a problem with that but in order for them to compete they need some quality players. They must strike a balance because fans always expect the team to win,’’ said the 35-year-old retired player.

Before the start of this season, the Cape side parted ways with several seasoned-campaigners like Mark Mayambela and Lebogang “Cheeseboy” Mokoena, among others.

Paulse bemoans their departure, saying they still had a role to play. “The team lost many experienced players which also affected their rhythm.”
