Previous Idols SA winners and finalists have given the current crop of contestants a big thumbs-up.

They believe that they are talented and noticeable individuals among the class of 2017 of the popular Mzansi Magic singing reality contest.

On Sunday, Paxton proved her worth once again with an effortless and classy rendition of Beyonce’s Listen. She got judge Somizi Mhlongo jumping on the table to applaud her.

Mthokozisi’s Kum’ na Kum by Ringo was another crowd pleaser and now all indications are that the race is firmly between the two.

Idols runner up Thami Shobede has been impressed by female contestants. But he mentions that Botlhale also gives him goose bumps.

“I’d like to believe there is talent, though [the] women are just super talented. I have enjoyed watching Botlhale performing, and he reminds me of when I was in the show.”

Shobede added that last year, Idols had contestants that were gifted both as vocalists and performers. “... But this year it looks like we have soulful voices who will do well in R&B and soul.”

Musa Sukwene, who won the competition in 2013, felt this year’s standard was too high due to the talent on offer.

Sukwene said his favourites were Mthokozisi, Phindy, and Paxton. “When you are in the top five or top six, you need to constantly remind yourself why you are there. It is at this stage that you need to also think about the big prize.”

Sukwene has advised the wannabes to stick to the winning formula and not try new things.

“At this stage, you don’t want to be exploring.

“You need to work hard and think about those who vote for you.”

Mmatema Moremi, the 2015 runner-up, said though she has not had a chance to watch the show this year, she noticed on Twitter that there were lots of talented musicians.

“They are all talented and bring their individual uniqueness to the show. Those who made it to the top six should start thinking about what they would do if they leave.”
