Exquisite artworks on show at the Mall of Africa
Exhibition brought to shops
The Mall of Africa in Midrand has brought art to the shops with its Art Collective in the glitzy high-end Crystal Court. An impressive range of exquisite artworks is competing for the eyes of shoppers with some of the most prestigious international fashion labels in this cathedral of conspicuous consumption.
Paintings and sculptures that focus on the subconscious, science and religion, township life, politics and social upheaval, nature, time and hope are on display. The works of controversial Ayanda Mabulu, Linda Hanna, Vincent Mbeje, Splash Motong, Siyabonga Mlambi, Simphiwe Mlangeni, TI Mkhwanazi, Khotso Kupi and Mbulelo Mabuto are among the 30 stopping traffic in the mall.
The presence of the artworks is also educational in the way of art styles and methods such as abstract expressionism, realism, perfectionism, satire, Barcode (one of the signature features of the Superblur movement that originated from the concept that in today’s world, everything seems to be barcoded) and Caturism (where the natural structure of a subject is broken down and emphasised in lines), a statement explains.
A number of artists will be at the mall during weekends to discuss their works and the stories behind their inspiration with customers, who will also be able to buy any pieces that catch their eye.
Visitors who have always fancied the idea of being immortalised in a work of art can have their likeness done by portrait artist Barry Fisher, who specialises in realism and hyper-realism portraits.
The exhibition runs until the end of the month.
