Bafana can look to SuperSport for a lift
Achievement is good for country, says Furman
Industrious midfielder Dean Furman believes SuperSport United’s exploits in Africa can serve as inspiration for Bafana Bafana ahead of South Africa’s do-or-die clash with Senegal.
Matsatsantsa a Pitori booked their place in the final of the CAF Confederation Cup this past weekend with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Tunisian side Club Africain.
As captain, Furman played a crucial role in leading the Tshwane outfit to become only the second South African side after Orlando Pirates to qualify for the final.
Bafana will face the Lions of Teranga in a make-or-break World Cup qualifier at Peter Mokaba Stadium on November 10.
South Africa must collect six points from their two home-and-away games against Senegal to qualify for the global showpiece in Russia next year.
“Reaching the Confederation Cup final is a great achievement, not only for SuperSport but for the country and Bafana as well,” Furman said yesterday upon SuperSport’s arrival at the OR Tambo International airport.
“When we face Senegal we will go into the match confident that we can pull off a miracle and win both matches against them.”
The former Doncaster Rovers midfielder is set to make a return to the Bafana squad after missing the 3-1 win over the Burkinabe earlier in the month due to suspension. Coach Stuart Baxter will announce his squad tomorrow.
The 29-year-old could play a pivotal role in the clash with fellow midfielders Andile Jali and Bongani Zungu suspended for the match.
Matsatsantsa will turn their attention to the Telkom Knockout first round against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Saturday.
