The Maredi family in Makotopong village outside Polokwane in Limpopo lost five relatives who perished in a horrific car accident at the weekend.

The accident on Friday afternoon happened when the car in which they were travelling collided head on with a truck and another car on the N1 road between Mookgophong and Modimolle.

The five were travelling from Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, to Makotopong for a funeral.

Chika Maredi, 57, his brothers Matsobane, 42, Ignatious, 54, and Ignatious’s wife Tiny, 52, including their daughter, Dineo, 11, all died in the accident.

Their cousin, Solly Maredi, said yesterday they were saddened by the tragic loss.

“As a family we are saddened to have lost so many members at once. It will take time to forget. We were waiting for them to arrive for the funeral of their uncle. It never occurred to us they could have been victims in that horrific accident,” Maredi said.

He said the deceased were loving people who respected family values.

“What is even sad is there is only their sister, Mokgadi, who is remaining in the family as their parents have passed on.”

Solly said Chika was a retired policeman, while Ignatious was still in the police service. He said they will be buried on Saturday.

On Thursday, 12 people died after a taxi in which they were travelling collided with a truck near Botlokwa outside Polokwane.

Three other people died in Mokgolobotho village near Tzaneen on Friday.
