Maemu’s WBA belt on the line against Majiha
Toweel wants champ to calm down in ring
Newly crowned WBA Pan African featherweight champion Rofhiwa “War Child” Maemu will be involved in his fifth fight this year, when he defends against Tanzanian Fadhili Majiha in Botswana on December 2.
Maemu, 25, won the title in Botswana against Immanuel Andeleki of Namibia on October 11. The fight was Maemu’s return to the ring three months after failing in his attempt to oust SA champion Azinga “Golden Boy” Fuzile in their closely contested 12rounder at Orient Theatre.
Majiha, 34, from Dar es Salaam, is a vastly experienced campaigner with 10 knockouts in 21 wins, nine losses and four draws. He is a former WBA Pan African junior featherweight champion.
Maemu’s trainer Alan Toweel jnr said: “We hope to defend the title and gain as much experience because our goal is to push him towards fighting for the actual WBA title. The most important thing for me and my guys is to grab these opportunities because I don’t have a strong promoter dedicated to my boxers.
“I believe Rofhiwa can get better with such fights. He had a good win against Immanuel and I saw improvement compared to his last two fights in terms of his boxing finesse. He can punch, got natural stamina but I want him to calm down but still not lose aggression.
“Maemu is still young, at 25. His overall package as a boxer needs to improve and I am glad to get him these 12rounders. It is difficult to get the guy better [when] they fight once in five months. The beauty is that he likes training and he learns quick.”
Toweel’s other three charges Nyiko Ndukula, Sifiso Hlongwane and Sikho Nqothole will also be in action in Gaborone. Ndukula will fight Tshepang Babui, Hlogwane will face Moabi Ngaka, while Nqothole will take on Gabriel Oching.
