Reaction to ‘resignation’ that wasn’t

- Mpho Sibanyoni

Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe’s media briefing that was expected to be a “resignation speech” that wasn’t last night left social media users underwhelmed and taken aback.

Stumbling through the speech, he spoke about maintaining law and order and said the coup against his administration demonstrated the unshakeable pedestal of peace.

“He said a lot, but didn’t actually say anything at all!” posted Ulrich J van Vuuren.

Tumi Sole said Mugabe “punked the entire world” and described Mugabe’s speech as a “good night” message.

Bezwebakhe said: “First it was a coup that turned … not to be so, then it was a resignation that did not happen …

“Imagine, the whole world has just been pranked by a 95year-old (93, actually),” posted Tshimo Leo.

Alex T Magaisa wrote: “He’s not going anywhere”.

“(Laugh out loud) Mugabe is a genius, he skipped the page about his resignation,” said Lytton Maisera.

Wakili Ochieng said: “So uncle Bob gave a resignation speech without actually resigning! #Mugabe is an ameliorated genius.”

Peter Nawa wrote: “This should be a lesson to all commanders. Next time you give a president a resignation speech, it should be one page with two words, ‘I resign’.”

Journalist Barney Mthombothi posted: “How does #Mugabe hope to chair the party congress when he’s no longer party leader? The man’s a bit gaga.” –
