Mashaba accused of ‘selective’ clean-up

ANC lays charges against ex-councillor

The ANC in Johannesburg has accused mayor Herman Mashaba of being selective in his anti-corruption campaign which has seen numerous employees of the city arrested.

Mashaba appointed former Hawks boss Shadrack Sibiya as the city’s new head of internal investigations unit which was tasked with leading the fight against corruption in the city in November last year.

However, the ANC, which laid charges of corruption against the city’s former mayoral committee member for economic development Sharon Peetz yesterday, accused Mashaba and the unit of incompetence.

The unit which operated as an independent institution has uncovered fraud and corruption amounting to more than R16-billion in under a year.

Peetz was expelled by Mashaba in August following allegations that she lied about paying for a family member who accompanied her to a convention in Barcelona, Spain, last year.

ANC chief whip, Solly Mo- gase, who laid charges at Jeppestown police station, said: “When thematter, which involves amember of his mayoral committee first emerged, Mashaba started by denying it before firing the MMC.”

Mogase said it was “hypocritical” that Mashaba was somehow not vocal about the city having to recoup ratepayers money from Peetz.

Mashaba’s spokesman Luyanda Mfeka, said: “Through her actions, it is the executive mayor’s belief that former councillor Peetz misled him, the council and the residents of Johannesburg.”
