Mawsoof to blow them away

Star Of Joburg could be good value for money

- By Racing Editor

Hat-trick hopeful Mawsoof made light work of his opposition in his handicap debut when producing a noteworthy 2.75-length victory in a 1000m contest last time. This speedy Trippi colt can outrun a strong field when he lines up in Race 6, a MR 83 Divided Handicap over 1200m today on the Vaal Outside track.

Mawsoof ’s last win was full of merit considering he gave away a lot of weight to rivals when justifying favouritism. Mike de Kock’s charge shouldered 8kg more than the second-placed Rebel Renegade, so he certainly looks to have potential. If that outing is any indication, he could prove better than his current merit rating of 84. He has in-form Callan Murray in the irons and is decently weighted on this occasion as he carries 4.5kg less than last time, although he is up in class.

If the Swinger and Exacta bet tickles your fancy then take Mawsoof with ultra-consistent Sean Tarry-trained Torre Del Oro who is better than his last outing suggests. He reunites with Piere Strydom and will carry just 1.5kg more than Mawsoof. Torre Del Oro was only 0.10-lengths shy of first place over the course and distance three runs back, plus he has won at the course before so, he is in it with a chance.

Trainer Erico Verdonese saddled a winner on Saturday and could add to his tally when he brings out Star Of Joburg, a three-year-old colt who is the best bet on the card and BiPot banker material. This son of Horse Chestnut can finally justify favouritism when he runs in Race 2, a Maiden Plate over 1000m. He has plenty scope for improvement and was beaten 3.25-lengths into third place by a promising sort in Pietro Mascagni last time. Star Of Joburg will also get the services of Devin Habib who knows him very well.
