Brockie guns for brace
Marksman well rested ahead of final shootout
Well-rested and recharged, SuperSport United sharpshooter Jeremy Brockie has set himself a target of two goals in the CAF Confederation Cup final second leg.
SuperSport will battle TP Mazembe in the final at the Lucas Moripe Stadium tomorrow (8.15pm).
Although Matsatsantsa lost 2-1 in the first leg in DR Congo at the weekend, they take a crucial away goal into their home leg.
Brockie travelled to three continents with New Zealand in their failed World Cup qualifiers in the last two weeks.
The 30-year-old striker, who is the leading goalscorer in the competition, had five days’ rest after returning from Lubumbashi on Monday.
“I am not happy with just 10 goals. It would be nice to score another two in the final and finish with 12 and hopefully that will be enough to win the cup,” Brockie said.
“I think we are in a good position with the away goal. We need to be patient and play smart. I go into every game wanting to score a goal.
“We have a lot of attacking players and you can’t keep us quiet for two games in a row.”
The New Zealand international has had a whirlwind journey since his arrival in South Africa in 2015. He scored on debut against Mpumalanga Black Aces to lead SuperSport to a 1-0 win.
In their journey to the final, he has travelled with SuperSport to Madagascar, Sudan, Liberia, Gabon, Guinea, Zambia, Tunisia and DR Congo.
“We have come up against all sorts of situations. This is it now. It comes down to 90 minutes of football. The boys are very excited and we can’t wait,” said the former Wellington Phoenix goal poacher.
“When I first came to the country I wanted to test myself in this competition. It would be brilliantly topped off if we can win the trophy this weekend. These are the competition that you remember as a player. I will be giving it my all and hopefully we can be successful.”
